This story has more to is and right now I tend to believe that it is story with a scintilla of truth but not to the degree that it is being purported.

I am glad to see you have moved a couple of inches on Kerry. Shows the story is having some impact on his supporters. The "They were my friends and now attack me for political reasons" story has merit. But there is a big difference between supporting a guy for Senate and President. Some who defended him against a "war criminal" charge are now willing to tell their experience with Kerry.

Another aspect of this that needs explanation is "why didn't they bring him up on charges?" If you ask UW or other combat vets they will tell you that when they get a guy in the outfit like Kerry the desire is to "get rid of him." It is easy to transfer out a EM, tougher for an Officer. That's why the three Officers got together and told Kerry to split after he promoted three Purple hearts.

One other major question that comes up is "why didn't they all bring this up before?" I hope O'Neil has a chapter in the book on this. The obvious answer is that nobody had put it all together. We know there was at least 240 of these vets that had enough of a Kerry experience that they were willing to sign on against him. What happened is that when Kerry decided to run for office there was enough publicity involved that they surfaced when O'Neil started interviewing.

It's like a jig-saw puzzle. Each one of them had a piece, but nobody saw the whole picture. O'Neil finally put it together. And the sum was bigger than anyone knew. I am sure that many of them were shocked to find out what it all looked like when O'Neil wrote it up.

The other thing to remember is that the overall Democrat/Republican split among vets is, at the worst, 60/40 Republican. That means these 240 member vet pool contains at least 96 Democrats. So this is not all "right wing Republicans." We know that O'Neil has voted Democrat. It is on the Nixon tapes. O'Neil is being attacked as "a long time enemy" of Kerry because he has opposed him for 35 years. Of course, at the same time, the other vets are accused on the basis of "where were you?"

The whole event is an amazing tale. If Kerry is brought down by it, there is an "All the Candidate's Men," Movie in this. And Redford is now old enough to play the O'Neil part. :>)
