[The death penalty] seems like something the Libertarians would inherently oppose as it gives the state powers over life and death.

It seems like that, but that's not how all Libertarians feel.

1. Some Libertarians (Constitutionalists, to be specific) point to the Fifth Amendment, which states that...

"[N]o person shall be deprived of life without due process of law[.]"

Therefore, the framers of the Constitution - however unspecifically - acknowledged that there were some crimes for which a person could (and perhaps should?) be deprived of life - but only after the due process of law was applied.

2. Other Libertarians argue that any individual who would undertake - viciously, with complete intent, premeditation and whatever else - to deprive another individual of their life and liberty should forfeit their own. They argue that part of our core value of responsibility is accountability, and if anywhere, accountability should be applied where matters of the ultimate form of coercion - cold-blooded murder - are under consideration.

Those are the two, major arguments used by Libertarians who support capital punishment.
