You've posed two candidates who can do the job, one of whom is agreeable and the other not. In that scenario you'd have to be an idiot to take the jerk. That's a no brainer. Perhaps you intended your scenario to differentiate more between the candidates in terms of skills and knowledge.

Personally, FWIW, I've always hired temperamental geniuses with great success. For some reason I don't fully understand, I have a knack for managing them, even bunches of them together, which is fortunate because a lot of IT types are like that and were even more so back in the days when I was hiring them. I wouldn't recommend that approach, though, generally.
