oh hell, dave, you love poetry. your interpretation's every bit as important as mine.

i just get a nice sense of humility from the speaker in the birthday poem, afeeling that he understands his place in the world and his own mortality.

yes, concision's important in poetry, but it doesn't always serve us well when we try prose. i've switched genres this semester and am studying nonfiction. it took me weeks to write a ten-page essay. i agonized over everything. talk about sweating bullets! and my teacher wants a few more revisions. argh. :-)

i like what i've read of straley's work. you've introduced me to a number of writers i'd not heard of.
