Ted, I think you need to realize that the polarization has been happening for much longer than just the past four years.

I think you maybe right. I think it may have been building steam for years and came to a head in the past 4 years.

Even back in 1988, I remember as a young kid watching the DNC, as they made fun of Bush Sr., saying, "He was born with a silver foot in his mouth!"

Dang! Didn't any of you have fun when you were kids? <g>

That was the same campaign in which Bush Sr. ran a bunch of negative ads against Dukakis, especially the "Dukakis in a tank" image and the infamous Willie Horton ads.

I know there have been negative ads but this feels different. Its not just name calling..........there is genuine hatred for both sides and their values. Since 2000 and maybe before, the GOP has treated the left as if it were as serious an enemy as OBL, and now that's the way the left views the right.

There is another point to all of this as well. For the past 50 years, this country has been headed in a particular direction that has resulted in increased liberalization of its values and culture. The American culture has always been more conservative than the Europeans; however, that gap in recent years had begun to blur.

Now its clear that only a portion of the country was heading down that path of liberalization. Another portion of the country not only was not going down the same road but resented that the rest of the country was. I think its that dichotomy of thinking that has surfaced in the past 4 years.........and I think its a significant one.
