reported fatality rates for Ebola range from 50-90%.

Actually, I knew that ebola was survivable when I typed that--I thought the fatality rate was around 90 percent, which seemed close enough to unsurvivable for the purposes of my point. I'm pleased to see that the survivability is greater than that.

One of the mitigating factors with smallpox is that, although it may spread quickly, only the first wave of victims, those who contract it before the outbreak is recognized, is at the worst risk. After that, those already infected can be vaccinated after the fact and reduce their risk considerably.

OTOH it would be easier for terrorists to get ebola then it is for them to get smallpox.

Yep, lotsa factors.

After all the effort that went into wiping out smallpox, a marvelous accomplishment when you think about it, it would be such a shame to let it loose again, a shame above and beyond the human cost of the outbreak itself.

The more we discuss this, the less I can rationalize the cost of searching commuter busses at the Pentagon...
