The Vietnam Defense
Blogs for Bush

Yesterday, John Edwards came to Kerry's defense over the Iraq issue, revealing what is likely going to be the common defense for any criticism that could be made against Kerry on a campaign issue.

A day after Vice President Dick Cheney criticized John Kerry, Democratic Sen. John Edwards defended his running mate on Friday, saying he spilled "his blood for the United States" and accusing the Republican of distorting Kerry's words.
Cheney told voters in Ohio Thursday that Kerry had called for a "more sensitive" war on terror and mocked that notion as something that won't impress the Sept. 11 terrorists of the Islamic militants who have beheaded U.S. citizens.

Edwards, returning to the campaign after a three-day break, took issue with Cheney's comments and his target — Democratic presidential nominee Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran.

"He took that word and distorted and tried to use it to argue John Kerry will not keep the American people safe," Edwards said. "He's talking about a man who still carries shrapnel in his body. He's talking about a man who spilled his blood for the United States of America." [emphasis mine]

The trial lawyer speaks: The Vietnam Defense.

This is going to be the theme of the Kerry campaign's rebuttals to everyone. "How can they criticize John Kerry? He was in VIetnam!" "How dare they criticize someone who 'spilled his blood' for our country."

You'll likely hear any variation of the above many times during the rest of Kerry's futile campaign.

I wonder what John Edwards has to say about the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. They all served our country. Surely, a number of them spilled their blood for the United States America...

Do they have a right to be heard? Apparently not. Certainly the Democrats and the Kerry campaign don't think they should be free of criticism.

Nevertheless, Cheney was not criticizing Kerry's service. Cheney was criticizing Kerry's position on a major issue of this campaign. Kerry's service was irrelevant and for John Edwards to bring it up more than once as part of Kerry's defense is absolutely ridiculous. If John Edwards really believed in this defense, he'd be representing the Swift Boat Veterans for truth saying "How can they criticize the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth? They were in Vietnam! How dare they criticize and silence people who spilled blood for their country?"

But you won't hear Edwards say that. The Vietnam Defense is Kerry's (not-so-secret) weapon to keep him protected from tough questions on his positions on key issues in this campaign.
