Our basic problem in Iraq is that our situation is, in the long run, untenable.> This is precisely the problem. We are left with little or no leverage within the region -- a region that a handful of US zealots predicted that we would quickly come to dominate -- that is not going to happen. Rather than "unfolding as it should", the region is "unravelling". The question remains, what do we do now? Bush is so highly identified with this failed foreign policy, it seems he must go before we can begin to chart a new course. This is not primarily "anti-Bush". It is simply a recognition that Bush does not have an ounce of credibility left that would allow him the luxury of changing our foreign policy -- he has left himself without options an can no longer effectively serve the interests of the United States. Much is made of people who supposedly hate Bush. When Bush was elected many took a wait and see attitude. In the immediate aftermath of 9/11 there was enormous support. Bush would have most of the country behind him on foreign policy if he had been wise enough to realize that a unilateral invasion of Iraq was neither wise nor needed, and indeed harmed us deeply in the region.
