Buy the book "Unfit for Command" and all your questions will be answered. One of his COs, possibly Elliot, was fed the incident details by Kerry alone & took him at his word that it occurred exactly the way Kerry reported it. He found out later from eyewitnesses that Kerry had embellished his role & exaggerated the number of VietCong.
