With ISDN I do indeed go to an RBOC, but from there I can switch to the service provider of my choice, or into the LD network, or a video call, or a LAN call to work...many options, many choices. Perhaps when the Inet goes to ATM and everything (voice, data, video) is routed over that pathway, the XDSL higher bandwidth technologies will prove better. But then we may have fiber to the home at that time.

ISDN phone sets are great! Instant call connection. Easy conference calls and transfers, Caller ID, call logs. Example of convenience. When telecommuting, I have my work phone (ISDN off PBX) forwarded to my home ISDN phone. If I have to go out, I forward my home ISDN phone to my cellular. Never miss a call (unless I want to). POTS lines can give you some of these features, but they are more difficult to implement and the RBOCs rip you off for these features (which are included as standard with ISDN lines).
