" BUT ONLY if the recipient made enough money to exceed the substantially increased exemption allowance as well as a sizable standard deduction."

Bovine excrement. I was single and newly unemployed the year that the tax code was in force. I had just gotten to about $20k per year when my job was riffed in June of that year. I exhausted my unemployment(a max. of $150 every two weeks), in Texas 6 months max., and didn't find a job until Feb. of the next year. I still had to cut a check for almost $1k for my unemployment. Remember, Texas isn't known for its generous unemployment benefits. Try some real facts, ok? I know it isn't your strong point, but...

Yeah. I'll remember that income averaging isn't needed for the future. Tell that to Ten, ok? While I can think of a lot of times when it could have been an advantage to me, I have your word that it could have been worse...

Nothing you cited would have affected the upwardly mobile. I was very much upwardly mobile during that time period. and after graduation I plan on continuing. My income went from $9k, when I graduated in 1979 to about $90k in 2002 when I decided to go back to school. Income averaging would have helped me a lot. The post-Reagan tax code cost me. I didn't complain because I thought it my due, but to claim I was better off is total nonsense...
