MORE than 200 bands from around the world yesterday took part in the World Pipe Band Championships on Glasgow Green.

The skirl of pipes could be heard in the city centre as around 8,000 musicians from as far afield as America, Australia and South Africa tuned their instruments for the main event.

Glasgow City Council said an estimated 32,000 spectators had gathered for the annual contest by early afternoon.

A council spokeswoman said the favourable conditions were helping draw in the crowds.

She said: "The weather is playing a large part. It is a beautiful day, compared to the wet weather we experienced last week.

"The sun is shining and the spectators are listening to good music from bands from all over the world."

Lord Provost Liz Cameron welcomed competitors and said: "It is fantastic that so many pipe bands from around the world will be showcasing their talent in Glasgow at these wonderful championships."
