Whatever OBL said in the past was not given much credence by the majority of the people in the ME. After the US invasion of Iraq, it wouldn't be surprising if there are more converts to OBL's cause in that region.

Attempting to colonize a country in the ME is a recipe for disaster. The British discovered it in the post-Ottoman era. And the Israelis discovered it when they tried to occupy Lebanon. But we don't want to learn from others' mistakes; we want to learn from our own blunders.
