Honestly, the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach says that even if Kerry was caught nailing kittens to trees in the dead of night wearing leotards and a tutu, with his face painted blue, it would not kill his campaign

Actually, the American political system doesn't have any mechanism to handle a candidate imploding at this stage, and couldn't deal with it, I think.

If the candidate is hit with something embarrassing, the campaign has no choice but to soldier on.

If the candidate were hit with something disqualifying, either political or a health issue like a heart attack, I really don't know what they would do. Thinking about it, I don't think we've ever had the case where a candidate for President has died or become disabled during the later stages of the campaign. (Robert Kennedy was shot during the primaries).
