Art and Thread

My son just arrived from Spain with his cell phone. The first thing I noticed after taking out the battery was the small memory card inside. I estimate the size of the card at 18 x 24 mm, which is the size of the SanDisk RS-MMC card. The only text on the card besides his phone number is "Amena", which is the name of a Spanish phone company.

The procedure for paying for mobile phone calls in Spain, and probably the rest of Europe is as follows:

He inserts his credit card into the ATM machine.

Up comes a menu that gives a number of choices, one of which is to send money to the phone company crediting his phone with 50 Euros (for example).

In about 2 or 3 minutes his phone starts beeping, and a message appears on his phone screen telling him that his phone has been credited with 50 more Euros.

The memory card stores information about the most recent 10 calls received and the most recent 20 calls sent.

There is no paper work connected with using the cell phone, although the phone company can supply him with archival information.

He has been using the same memory card for about 4 years, so I have to question whether or not it is an RS-MMC card.

Do we have a similar system in this country that uses smart cards? I am not familiar with all of the phone services available in this country.
