Sadr is (or at least was) nothing really -- except that he fills a huge vacuum left by our invasion. He is at least as credible as the "government" we installed -- arguably he is far more credible because he stands for resistance against American occupation rather than serving as an agent of American occupation. We lost the initiative a long time ago -- the decisions now have to do with what to do with the mess. The issues in Iraq are political, economic and religious -- and yet we continue to behave as if they are military and we continue to seek military "solutions". That is why we have done so poorly.
