Since the fall of Saddam, professional polling companies have polled the Iraqis. They turn out to be nationalistic - they want their own government (Allawi) on top, and the US and Iran out. Support for Allawi is running above 70%.

The citizens of Najaf hate Sadr. His men are illiterate thugs, and they have taken over the town again, and destroyed business and brought a perfectly unnecessary war on their heads. What is Sadr going to offer them that they cannot get from Allawi's government? According to polls, only about 10% of Iraqis want a theocracy. The majority, esp. most of the Shia majority, want a democracy. They don't need a war to get it!
