Kerry Haters: We're Not Fonda John

KerryHaters was first to blog on the Christmas-in-Cambodia lie, way back on May 21. Too bad the elite media hadn't cast their net widely enough. They'd have had a scoop long ago.--Hugh Hewitt

Christmas in Cambodia hits the Wall Street Journal

Most of the article is a rehash of what has been covered at exhaustive length here, but I do like their conclusion:

Does this matter? Well, if President Bush was found to be using tall tales from his National Guard days to justify his policies in the war on terror it would certainly attract some attention. So the would-be commander in chief can hardly complain of being subject to scrutiny, especially since he's joined in criticism of Mr. Bush's war record and made his own a campaign centerpiece. Never mind the anti-Kerry swiftees. So far the veteran whose testimony is doing John Kerry the most damage is . . . John Kerry.

The Alston Story Hits the Media

Byron York covers the story at NRO. He fails to acknowledge the efforts of Captain Ed and others who broke the story (and we know exactly how Captain Ed feels; it does seem that if you break the story you should be given credit by those who cover it afterwards).

York adds something to the story; it now appears that Alston did return to the PCF-94 before Kerry's third Purple Heart got him a ride home.

According to Short, who supports the Kerry candidacy and appeared alongside Alston with Kerry at last month's convention, Alston was gone during the month of February and did not return to the boat until March. Short remembers going on his first patrol on PCF-94 on February 18, 1969 — he recalls the date clearly because it was his birthday. Short remembers taking part in his last operation on PCF-94 around March 4. He believes Alston returned a few days later.

However, the important point is this:

Whatever the exact dates, Hurley confirmed that Alston was not on board PCF-94 on February 28, 1969, the day Kerry earned a Silver Star for an engagement in which he beached his Swift Boat and chased down and killed a Viet Cong guerilla armed with a rocket launcher. That suggests that Alston, who was wounded on January 29, was indeed away for at least a month. Short was manning the guns on February 28 and received the Navy Commendation Medal for his work.

Of course, that conflicts with the Reverend Alston's account of witnessing Kerry beaching the boat....

The Questions That Must Be Asked

Crush Kerry hits the nail on the head with this post. The only thing I would add is that the first debate is September 30, by which time it might be too late for the Department of Defense to process the request (indeed, John O'Neill indicated that might already be the case in his radio appearance with Hugh Hewitt on Friday). Which means that the time to ask the question is now, every day on the campaign trail.

Some other questions we would like to see answered:

1. Did you claim during a speech at Howard University to have been in Mississippi in the 1960s, registering voters? Why is this experience not discussed in Douglas Brinkley's Tour of Duty?

2. How do you explain the story that you told on many occasions for many years about an experience on Christmas Eve/Day about being in Cambodia, that you claimed was seared--seared--in your brain? Have you corrected the Congressional Record on this claim and when?

“SOMETHING OF A CHARADE”

This article comes from Canada. Yes, Canada!
Kerry's charade
By Paul Jackson -- Calgary Sun
It was hard not to chuckle at the piece of pantomime as John Kerry appeared on stage at the Democratic National Convention, gave a mock salute, and said, "My name is John Kerry, and I am reporting for duty."
This, I thought, is the start of the man's undoing.
It was all just too theatrical. Something of a charade.

Yet O'Neill and Corsi claim not only were the three wounds superficial, but alleges one was self-inflicted. The authors say an accompanying crewman told the examining doctor who was treating Kerry for his first "wartime injury" that Kerry even then was planning to run for president.
Quickly, set the stage!
They claim Kerry spent much of his time in Vietnam filming himself in scenarios carefully designed to look dangerous, and it is certainly true Kerry did take a movie camera with him to Vietnam. Again, setting the stage?

O'Neill -- again Kerry's successor as commander of the Swift PCF 94 -- says the presidential nominee was so self-centred and such a self-promoter that fed-up crew members asked him to go home after he had served just four months in Vietnam.
They quote the gunner's mate who sat behind Kerry for most of his stay in Vietnam saying he came to regard him as incompetent and dishonest.
