The fact that the Continental Congress didn't inject religion into the nation's formation doesn't mean it was absent, and there certainly was no intolerance for the religion of those who were present.

The kind of bashing of Bush that has occurred due to his religion is, as far as I'm aware, unprecedented in this country. Carter, Reagan, and Clinton have all expressed significant religious belief (although, it is possible Clinton's was an "act"), yet only Bush has been beaten up for it.
