Ever the absolutist, JP steers clear of the slippery slope altogether.

You know. It is not really a slippery slope. At least I don't think it is. If I am to present Hugo's work, I am going to also keep in mind your perceptions, your hopes and impressions, this, gathered from your culture. So, when you come to see Hugo, you will see him via me.

But I will not present a few words on behalf of George Bush, dedicating the production of Les Miserables to the Swiftvets. To do such a thing is to corrupt Hugo! It is a corruption of the entire night! As much as I support Bush, should I do such a thing I have stolen from you, likely creating ill-will.

It is nothing upon which anyone ought to build community. As a society, we ought not accept such dishonor. We certainly ought not defend it in the name of "free speech."
