Americans responded to the shock of 9/11 in various ways.

We only know a few of these stories. Here's one:

"...And as I came in [to a meeting in Sen. Daschle's office], Barbara Boxer and Harry Reid were standing there, and we watched the second plane come in to the building. And we shortly thereafter sat down at the table and then we just realized nobody could think, and then boom, right behind us, we saw the cloud of explosion at the Pentagon..."

This happened to be told by a man from Massachusetts named John Kerry. I personally do not blame him for his temporary inability to think straight for some 40 minutes, even though he had special responsibilities in a national crisis as a United States Senator -- a high elective position wherein he represented the interests of millions of constituents who sent him to Washington.
