As a marketing coordinator for a systems integration process automation firm in the Western US, I can provide you with some statistics on automation in the semiconductor industry. The event that defined the need for automation was when the manufacturing processes, because of advances in design, required single wafer processing instead of batch. This fact, along with the move to larger wafers precluded operators from handling product. Auto loaders started being used. Inspectiong wafers at the etch and and metal stages required the integration of metrology and process parameters into the equipment. Process control allows operators to monitor what is going on operationally with a fab at any time. This means less spoiled or botched product, and the ability to troubleshoot prior to a problem arising that would result in a loss of product.
