Well, the U.S. has been more or less led by a conspiracy since the Viet Nam era. I'm not even going to get into the whole thing about FDR knowing the Japs were going to bomb Pearl Harbor, although there is a lot of evidence that points in that direction.

Viet Nam was a sham, a construct of the military industrial complex to further their influence and enrich their shareholders. Even if JFK wasn't killed because he intended on pulling the plug on Viet Nam, Johnson and Nixon certainly let it get out of hand and go on for far too long. Who lost and who gained?

As far as the wars we've fought in the Middle East over the past 14 years. There is much conspiracy on the part of our government that has surrounded those military actions. They were planned as far back as the 1970s, during the Nixon and Ford Adminstrations. The U.S. drew up plans to take over the Mid East oil fields by force in those years. President Carter's Adminstration actually identified Saddam Huessein as a potential future adversary in the oil rich Persian Gulf, as they formulated the Carter Doctrine for protecting the oil supplies. Also, Iraq threatened to invade Kuwaitt in the early 1970s and were rebuffed by the British. So, the Gulf War certainly wasn't a surprise to anyone high up in our government. It was allowed to happen for greater geopolitical reasons, like ensuring our control over the oil resouces. Now we have two more wars that have expanded our power and influence in the two most important oil producing regions of the world. Surprise, Surprise, or not. More like by design.
