To be sure, the US has been eyeing Middle East oil for a very long time.

Saddam was flattered by US attention and I think he was manipulated into an 8-year war with Iran (1980-1988) so that those two countries would mutually weaken themselves thereby making them easy takeover targets by the US at a later time.

The present occupation of Iraq by US forces seems to be right on schedule. But, unfortunately, the US now finds itself in a quagmire. They are damned if they leave now, and they are damned if they continue to stay.

However, Gwynne Dyer (a former political analyst at the Univ. of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and now an independent journalist based in London, England) thinks that regardless of whoever becomes the next Prez of the USA, he is likely to pull troops out of Iraq.
