Let's not forget that Kerry is a throwaway candidate. If they have to throw him away early, they won't hesitate... There is no mechanism in American politics for a candidate 'throwaway' between nomination and the election, and we've never even had a candidate keel over during that time, which would have forced the creation of some precedent. No, the Dems are stuck with Kerry until election day, no matter what comes. So they have no choice but to tough it out.
