Sure it would. The cases of mixed marriages in the days of segregation were tried many times. They all upheld the right of the states to determine legal marriages. Likewise, the issue of first cousins marrying. And when Utah allowed polygamous marriages, those weren't legal in the other states either. Now granted, Utah wasn't a state but only a territory at that time, but... So there is a large body of case law to support this right of the states.

As far as it being a mess, since when is it the obligation of the government to ensure that people don't make their lives messy? What are the limits, if any, of this sort of meddling?
