His preoccupation with his medals borders on being an obsession. If you check Kerry's released military records, you will notice that Kerry amended his DD214 with a DD215. Among other things, Kerry burnishes his Vietnam Service medal by adding four bronze service stars to reflect various campaigns. This was done in March 2001!!! Why anyone would go through that effort to make some meaningless changes is beyond me.

It is now clear why the records cannot be released. The changes are prolific and on-going. I don't know a single other Vet who ever had his records changed. I've been a member of the SF community for 42 years. I am a retired officer. And I didn't even know it was possible for a serviceman to change his records.

Kerry didn't change his records because he wanted service stars. He wanted battle stars.

The Service Stars are known on the military street as battle stars. They were authorized at the rate of approx one every six months in Vietnam. I was awarded three for the period Dec68- Dec 69. Kerry was there from Dec 68-Mar 69.
The Battles in that period were The Vietnam Counter-offensive Phase VI, The TET 69 Counter Offensive, and Vietnam Summer-Fall 69.

Kerry was not there for the third and may not have been there for the Second. Tet 69 began on Sunday, Feb 23rd. That was the date the seige of Ben Het really began and it is seared in my memory if you know what I mean. It is also shortly before Kerry left Nam.
I don't know the exact date the Counter Offensive began. At best he got either 1 or 2. Claiming four is outrageous.

Service Star
"A five-pointed metal star 3/16-inch in diameter worn on campaign and service ribbons to denote additional award or participation in designated campaigns or operations. A silver Service Star is worn in lieu of five bronze.
Service Stars are also affixed to the Parachutist Badge to denote participation in a combat parachute jump, retroactive to 07 Dec 1941."

Just to clear the record before I get caught, I want ya'll to know that looking at my DD-214 right now, I see that I only got credited with 10 years, 4 months and 26 days of overseas service. That is not the 10 1/2 - 11 years I previously claimed.
I know what they missed. I was a patient in Japan for 3 and 1/2 months and I was on a secret mission in Cambodia for the other 3 1/2 months. I am going to request a record change.
