Duke - IMHO, These were three of the most competent executives in the industry, all with great track records and deep understanding of the dynamics of the business. In the pre-merger Compaq they were the 'go to' guys when things got tough. I don't know what they were supposed to have done at the new HP but my suspicion is they had the task of filling the box on the pert chart labeled 'and then a miracle happens'... it may also have been an HP old guard move to further reduce the influence of the former CPQ folks, but I have nothing but speculation to back that up.
