In early 2000 a friend of mine came out of a meeting with Carly and described her as 'a woman with a whip'. The reference was to someone training big cats rather than the darker notions that language might invoke. But his point was that even then, if a knowledgeable executive balked at some unnatural act the response was not to reexamine the practicality of the goal or resource allocation but to crack the whip. That was at the point where Carly had promised 15% growth which didn't pass the 'burst of laughter test' according to one wag, but execs were supposed to come up with plans to deliver that number.

At Classic Compaq, such wild plans were marked with the acronym "TAH" - short for "That Ain't Happening". That pragmatic Compaq attitude went into decline with the influx of Tandem execs and pretty much disappeared after the DEC acquisition.
