It's more than that. Yes, Hewitt is right, but it's more than that.

I've been lurking Democratic Underground all day, and finally came up with the meme that says it all for me. They were talking about the Electoral College, and how, if the country ever gets rid of it, there will never be a Republican elected to national office again.

They're probably right. But of course, it doesn't matter. They won't ever get rid of the Electoral College. It can't be gotten rid of via the popular vote. And thus, it can't be gotten rid of at all.

When you study the history of slavery, and that's a truly shameful history, indeed, you realize how close to bedrock the Electoral College is. It's at the core of everything we've done as a nation throughout our history.

For good, or for ill, or for both at the same time, we are not a truly representative democracy.

A truly representative democracy is one missionary and two cannibals, deciding who/what to eat. We will never go there.
