Maurice, Last season the human cases of avian flu first appeared in ProMed reports in December. There may have been earlier cases, but the first confirmed deaths in humans from avian flu was Dec, which paralleled the animal outbreaks.

The flu in Asia was most widespread in Jan/Feb and then waned in the spring.

It seems to be starting early,

although this may be due to more awareness. However, deaths have been reported this month in Vietnam, and there are reports of animal infections from China, Thailand, Vietnam, and now Malaysia.

The virus continues to pick up Human/swine sequences and it is expanding its host range (via H5N1 and H9N2 isolates). I expect the virus to be more widespread and deadly this season. It has become extremely unstable geneticly, and more recombinations are expected
