Yes and it important to remember the boats movement changes it's attitude or position swiftly in the water and firing is easily directed at least slightly off course. The water after a mine explosion would have many swells as well.

Rassman isn't going to know if there is enemy or friendly fire. He assumed enemy fire because frindly 50s were straffing the beaches. I bet noboby ever told him otherwise.
