your exuberance makes me smile. i don't have a deep visceral connection to this but it is interesting to watch it play out, character assassination 101, oldest dirtiest nastiest trick in the book and you are staking your reputation on this, with such pronouncements

Well in this case, the character had it coming, certainly in part. Christmas in Cambodia, sure buddy. The idol with the feet of clay ran with the campaign slogan "Look at my feet!". The swiftvets have been busy scratching off the gold paint and displaying the clay for all to see. Now the idol's in a tough corner.

What's really fascinating is what just happened to the media. (A thousand PhD theses will be born of these weeks). A story came up that was practically the mirror image of the Bush-AWOL story that the media were enthralled with just a few months ago, and they took it up only as a fine lady takes up a dead fish - with extreme reluctance and many cries of disgust. The contrast in handling could not be clearer. The mask is off. What's worse for them, they found they could not avoid it -- they have been forced to put it on the front page against their will.
