I've worked with hydrogen quite a bit, and yes it is a pain. I would think though, there must be some molecule that has all the advantages of hydrogen, yet not such a pain, but can be manufactured from energy sources such as wind, nuclear power etc.

Gasoline is dangerous too. Half a cup of Gasoline vaporized in air is equal to several sticks of dynamite in explosive power. We use that all the time though.
