When I first heard the story I assumed the President had been told a plane had hit the WTC, and thought his response reasonable.

However, when I understood that the second plane had already hit and Andrew Card told the President in no uncertain terms "We are under attack."... well... that's different.

A sensible Commander-in-Chief would have calmly placed the book down, explained to the children that "Mr. Card informed me of something that requires my immediate attention, and I must leave now. Continue your lessons and study hard, yada yada yada..." and been out of there in 30 seconds.

Your characterization of Bush's possible alternative response, an exaggerated Rush Limbaugh "jump up, startle vulnerable schoolchildren" litany defends Bush by suggesting that Bush acted correctly because the only other response would have been incorrect.

Not so. A leader acts calmly, but decisively... and doesn't waste time reading "My Pet Goat" when under attack.

If he abruptly jumped up, dropped the book & startled the vulnerable schoolchildren, Liberals would now declare him unfit for his lack of SENSITIVITY. (one of their fav words)
