What I was thinking of was the behavior of the Japanese army in China. One explanation for their widespreading raping and killing (aside from the obvious one that the brass encouraged it) was that they were from an honor/shame society, where your behavior is usually tightly constrained by the knowledge that the neighbors are watching. Conversely, when there are no neighbors, all bets may be off.
