There are better molecules - methane CH4 comes to mind, propane C3H8 both already in use. Butane C4H10 has it's own odor.
The alchols are liquid at room temperature, easy to transport.
Extensive liquid handling infrastruture already in place.

H2 is much more expensive to handle.
