Well Kerry says this about the incident, in his own book, "It was a half-assed action that hardly qualified as combat, but it was my first, and that made it exciting." Furthermore Kerry was still in training in the rear area of Camh Rahn bay. Kerry's Globe book both Zaldonis and Runyon both said they were too busy to see how Kerry was hit. later Runyon said that never knew Kerry was wounded. Runyon siad I can't say for sure that we got return fire or how Kerry got nicked. I know he did get a scrape on the arm. Kerry's CO Grant Hibbard was very skeptical about the injury. The Globe also talked to William Schacte the OIC during the "operation". He went on to make admiral. Kerry declined to be interviewed by the Globe reports for no reason. Schate says he berated Kerry for almost putting someone's eye out for his half assed M-79 grenade shot which struck a rock on the bank. Kerry's injury was dressed with a band aid. Kerry had a hard time keeping the grenade splinter in his arm. When Kerry went to see the medic, the medic said, you're kidding right? Kerry applied for the purple heart at Grant Hibbards office and Hibbard said the injury does not merit the purple heart. He told Kerry to forget it. There was no hostile fire, the injury was self-inflicted and besides it was nothing more than a scratch. Kerry wasn't getting any purple heart recommendation from me. Somehow Kerry gamed the system nearly three months later to get the Purple Heart that Hibbard had denied. How he obtained it to this day is unknown.
