I'll submit one idea as to why it is relevant. The gravest decision a president can make is to sacrifice the blood of other's sons and daughters.

If anything else, somebody who knows about the tragedy of war and who worked to end a tragic war will not be blind - will not hide his eyes - from the human cost of Iraq or some future war of opportunity.

Maybe after living through death, it's hard to ask others to do the dying for you. Harder yet to ask them to do the dying for you when there was is no imminent threat. Harder still to advocate and prosecute for death because of your own fantasies such as; bring peace to the mideast through war/chalabi is our man/this war that will pay for itself/politicaly, you'll either be for us or against us.

"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths. Oh, I mean, it's not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

Who said that?
