John, try hitting the AOL Keyword "X2", if you're using a US Robotics 56K modem. (There's another keyword if using Flex technology.) AOL is currently doing field tests of 56K modems and they have a limited number of faster access lines. I'm able to get 43.6kbps from AOL through these special numbers.

(btw, I'm finding that many web pages snap up as quickly on a 56K modem as on the T3 at work... it's the HTTP connection that's the bottleneck on small files, while faster lines are much better for larger single connections. Until HTTP 1.1 servers and clients are prevalent, with their options for "keep-alive" connections, the multiple connections demanded by Dynamic HTML and Java will make for a longer total net download on rich pages than the single-file default for Shockwave work.)

Anyway, give a try to the new 56K connections... believe you'll enjoy 'em! 8)
