KB, your report is learned, but blaming the press corp for turning the tide of public opinion is unjust imo.
Up until Tet, we had been told that 1. We were winning the War, 2, the South Vietnamese army was strengthening. 3. the VC were a rag-tag force that was on the run.
TET dispelled all the above. While the TET offensive itself may have been a disaster militarily to the VC and NV, it was an incredible psychological and progaganda victory. The waging of war is much more than military. Whether they thought the South Vietnamese would rise up in support or not, Tet was probably the decisive moment in the war, the "beginning of the end" of the American belief that it could win the war.
BTW, i reported for active duty 1/28/68 -right when the TET offensive happened. larry
