James, I am in total agreement with you on that subject. Not only has the Everglades been reduced to a mere speck compared to what it was, it is being polluted by too much activity by human beings that have no consideration for the plant, animal, and bird, life that relies on the region for their existence. In Florida, they call that cat, the Florida Panther, but it is closely related to the Cougars in Texas. To try and prevent too much interbreeding, and weakening the gene pool, Texas Cougars have been introduced to the panther community, and it is of some help, but the destruction of habitat is causing tremendous damage to the ecosystem.
Humans must come to realize, that all creatures of the earth are important to the over all ecology of the planet. The same goes for trees, and other indigenous plants. As I am sure you know, they provide the oxygen we breath. Human pollution has closed beaches along the Gulf coast several times each year I have been here, and the building of homes on the beaches is not only stupid, because of the frequency of storms, but it degrades the beach to a point that it is washing away.
I have seen "Soylent Green" several times, and it should have served as a warning to people, but they just chalked it up to fictional sci-fi. They seem to forget that humans in space was once considered to be fictional, and didn't have a chance of happening.
While man is considered to be the most intelligent form of life on earth, he is actually ignorant of his surroundings, and continues to corrupt his own house.
I am very fearful for the future of mankind unless keener minds take over the control of the ecology. I'm not a radical tree hugger, like those in Green Peace, who are too militant to get the message to interested ears, and will not live long enough to see the final demise, but is bothers me, never the less.
