Edwards Blasts New Overtime Rules

RACINE, Wis. - Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards
on Monday criticized the Bush administration and its
economic policies for new workplace rules that he contended reverse
more than 60 years of protecting overtime pay.

The changes affect mostly white-collar
workers, according to the Labor Department
. Edwards and
presidential nominee John Kerry predict that teachers, computer
programers and others could see their pay
shrink after the changes go into affect on
Monday.

"We're not going to take away your
overtime," Edwards told hundreds of people
at a rally at a Racine meeting hall.

Estimates of how many workers might see
their pay decrease because of changes in
the Fair Labor Standards Act vary from
107,000 to 6 million. Supporters of the
changes claim up to 1.3 million workers
could become eligible for overtime because
of the changes.

Employers sought the changes for decades,
complaining that regulations were confusing
and out of date.

Edwards called for changing the tax code,
providing small-business incentives and
moving toward energy independence as
ways to retain and increase jobs.

"We're going to roll back tax cuts for the
richest Americans," he said.

The Bush-Cheney campaign said the
Democrats have distorted the president's
record and the new rules will grant overtime
pay to some workers not now eligible.

"This attack is another example of the Kerry campaign trying to mislead
American workers," spokesman Matt McDonald said. "The only loser
under this reform is the trial lawyers who have created an overtime
lawsuit industry that costs our economy $2 billion per year."

Edwards amassed his personal fortune as a plaintiff's trial lawyer before
winning election to the Senate from North Carolina in 1998.

Edwards defended Kerry's character and his wartime record, calling
television ads attacking Kerry "a lie" and maintaining that Kerry served
"honorably" in Vietnam. A group of veterans who served with Kerry in
Vietnam have claimed in the ads that Kerry lied and exaggerated his
wartime record.

"Those ads are being funded by and pushed by friends of George W.
Bush," Edwards said.

The White House and the Bush campaign have denied any direct
connection to the veterans group. A volunteer left Bush's campaign
Saturday after the campaign learned he appeared in one of the group's
ads.

After his stop in Racine, Edwards was headed to Oshkosh and later to
La Crosse. Kerry is scheduled to visit Green Bay on Wednesday.
