That one I am somewhat familiar with.
It was not a MoveOn ad, it was merely a submission by an independant to become an ad, and was both rejected and denounced. The only official ad featuring Hitler came from the Bush camp.

it seems like it would pretty hard for Bush or anyone else to determine what really happened without actually being there.

You make it sound like nobody can know anything. That is a nylistic viewpoint. Of course the evidence can be weighed and it doesn't require reading every since document from the DOD. It is merely a matter of looking at the proffered evidence and seeing which ones conflict and which don't.
