It never got paid off in the 90's In the 90's we had a current year surplus (more money coming in then going out for couple of years) we have yet to actually pay down our debt. Check it out since 1987 it was 2.3 trillion now 7.4 trillion. Right now almost 25% yes 1/4 of the budget just goes to pay interest on the debt. And it will only get worse what happens when interest rates rise? Why this isn't huge issue in the election is beyond me. Your kids and grand kids will pay and pay dearly, if not you in the near future.... The deficit makes me sick.... publicdebt.treas.gov
