Bob; If you look at the 486 which went from 16 to 2- to 33 to 66 to 100 megahertz, the last two the 66/2 and 100/4 were actually 33 meg chips doubled and tripled in speed internally
I do not think the 486 dice(naked silicon ready to bond into a carrier or?) were sold by Intel back then. However Motorola will sell the dice for the various chips that are used in Apples now. Companies buy them and put them on special carriers, and add assorted types of Cache memory, and possibly use some level of clokc speed multiplication(you can multiply by assorted odd numbers, like 2:1, or 7:5, or 19:18, the actual numbers depend on what the mother boards
need to see for various timings(cards too) and the max speed the chips will run at without burning up.
This is my speculation as to where the accelerator chips come from, as the style of the companies selling them does not imply foundry ownership, so they must be buying dice.
We used to do this with 486-16 to make them run faster by changing the clock speed of the whole boards. You had ot be careful as some CPUs cooked in a few hours, and often the card bus would not like the new high speed. Then they started makiing the motherboards jumperable for all this stuff. And then they made the BIOS read the chip speed and put a stop to it(except for super speed operation of the bus which continues.)
