IBM selected the 8088, not the 8080. The 8088 had an 8 bit
interface instead of the 8086 16 bit. I don't believe they
got cross licensing to manufacture the chip from Intel until
IBM got a 30% equity stake in Intel to keep them from going
bankrupt in the mid '80's. IBM had to float them a $250 million
loan to keep them solvent.

With the Intel margins eroding due to competition it is doubtful
that they can maintain their investment rate in new fabs at
their classical pace. As far as the highest margin mix, they
have said they have no interest in the low end and they are
leaving the socket 7 business. Is that not painting themselves
into a corner? What is this margin mix you are talking about?
If your mainline product becomes a commodity you have lost all
control vis a vis pricing.
