to your last point about intelligent people being taken in so long -- i think there was always a gun ready to take any opposite thinking or nuanced thinking intellectuals away (for those who lived under the system). for those who lived outside the system i think it appealed to their social worker/religious feelings, and they had the freedom to explore the alternative possibilities. once i asked a friend of mine from rumania how all the people were kept from meeting/talking, etc., in private, and he said we just don't understand the paranoia the communist states created by punishing anyone reported for thinking unclean thoughts.
