What puzzles me is why anyone in their right mind took or allowed pictures to be taken inside the prison.

Probably because they were essentially kids in their early 20's, and at that age most folks are morons in many ways. Just as Kerry was when he made his comments that were so offensive to so many of the combatants in Viet Nam. If he had the common sense to admit that, he might be able to defuse some of inevitable negative fallout from the Swift Boat ads.

While I'm an unenthusiastic Bush supporter, to some degree I'm a little sympathetic to Kerry's situation. While his war crimes comments appear truly insensitive today, at the time they were almost restrained compared to the other voices against the war. By 1971 it was obvious to almost everyone that continued involvement in Viet Nam was an exercise in futility, and the lives that were lost would be a waste. This isn't a comment on the morality of the war - just a reflection of how things were. Kerry did give the anti-war movement a veneer of respectability, which it needed in view of the truly reprehensible zealots who were carrying Viet Cong flags and Mao's Little Red Book.

What I fear about Kerry today is his judgement; making his Viet Nam experience a central focal point of his candidacy was stupid, and not to have anticipated the reaction is even more stupid. The Bush administration is open to a lot of legitimate criticism, but Kerry's campaign hasn't given me any confidence that he'd have any more of a clue as to how to deal with the crises that are out there than the current administration does, and he'd probably be even more blundering.
