Sun platform lights fire under tepid NC
"Moreover, some observers are wondering why Sun Microsystems' new reference platform, called JavaEngine 1, isn't powered by one of the company's long-awaited Java-specific microprocessors (they aren't expected to be available until early next year), but rather by a 100-MHz embedded Microsparc-IIep CPU.

Sun is aiming the JavaEngine 1 specifically at OEMs looking to construct their own thin-client systems which can function as low-cost Web browsers, Internet phones or diskless word-processing boxes. "We're enabling OEMs to incorporate Java computing into any system they build," said Dhaval Ajmera, marketing director at Sun. "We're selling soup to nuts--OEMs can buy a chip, they can get a design kit with schematics and software, or they can buy a complete board."
